MUSIC MAGAZINES: MEDIA LANGUAGE

Look carefully at the front covers of MOJO and RNR magazines.

QUESTION: How far do MOJO and RNR use different media language to create different connotations(CONNOTATION meaning: an idea or quality that a word makes you think about in addition to its meaning.)

Answer on your blog. This is a high-value question and should take all lesson to answer. You can use the class blog search engine for more examples of how to analyse music magazines.

In your answer you should have 2 paragraphs:

  • analyse the media language in MOJO and RNR magazine. 'Media language' includes the placement of the main image, the type of photography, lighting, colours, fonts, how busy or restrained the cover is, the layout (such as alignment to the margins), how serious or playful
  • make judgements and draw conclusions about how far the media language is used differently in both extracts to create different connotations. Are there similarities in both covers? What sorts of audiences are they targeting? You could think about MOJO's rock aesthetic of living loud and dangerously compared to RNR's folk, rock, blues vibe.

The foo fighters has a bold title in caps and italics with and agry looking Dave Grohl grabbing the letters. Dave Grohl is lit from front on showing his is hard and proud. The camera angle is pointing up at him making him look powerful, important and confident. His expression on his face is shown to be scary to show people what a live he has lived and how much he has gone through. The quote "we've been to funerals we've been to jail" enquires a hard life full of hard rock and exsitment he has lived. Mojo generly have a busy cover and always a freebie CD on the front, This issue has a busy magarin describing the contents of the magazine two other stories at the top on the issue other then just foo fighters. The magazine is very playful looking exciting and a good read wich will keep you on your toes.Compared to the R&R magazine which is a lot more relaxed the mojo and is sure for a long interesting read.Christy More is lit from a side light revealing his wrinkles and showing the reader that he is an old exsprinced man who knows the ins and out of the genre of music. The camera angle is also looking up at christy more showing his exspreince and expertise in music and that he has a lot to say and she should by the issue to read his words. The words Chisty More are very plain on the magazine because everyone reading knows he is and his reputation proceeds him so he does not need a bigger introduction than that. The R&R also has a freebie CD to be more atvestising to buy if you are not that interested in Christy More. The magazine is less playful and more low-key for a more eazy relaxed read compared to Mojo.
  • Mojo has a more hard rock sacrifings for your music vibe to the magazine compareted to the R&R folk rock a more relaxed read just for the love of music where the Mojo is the more exciting read. Both magazines follow a very similar template but with completely different styles. The title of the magazine the main artist and his name and then a margin of other artists on the issue and both a freebie CD. A clear indicator of the vibe of the magazine is the background, on the Mojo the background in wild and crazy and eyecatching compared to the R&R which is a completely solid colour atracing a different kind of person. The Mojo might attract a younger Rock fan someone more middle aged looking for an existing read weather the R&R is for the older rock fans who likes the classics and don't care about the exsistment.

CUFFS: REAL LIFE

How far does that extract try to create a sense that it is portraying 'real life?

The extract seeks to portray the experience is being a member of the police force and goes to many different mesausers to make this happen. For example, when they put the camera in the police car it gives us a sense of being in there with them and makes us feel like we are really there. This gives us a measure of excitement and gives u a sense of enjoyment. This is because the BBC is required to give us good quality television like cuffs with their exciting camera shots.
